About the Course

ATPL study asks a pilot to bring knowledge together — a calculation must make sense, an instrument indication needs an explanation, and a weather assessment has to be understood in context.

IFA's ATPL Ground School gives advanced theory the time and attention it needs. Classes build on earlier ground study through worked problems, discussion and regular revision, helping students develop the depth to explain an answer as well as identify it in a test.

What the Course Covers

The syllabus reference is DGCA CAR Section 7, Series B, Part VI for ATPL Aeroplanes. Core preparation covers:

Air Navigation — Appendix A

• Navigation fundamentals, time, direction and distance
• Magnetism, compasses, charts and dead reckoning
• In-flight navigation, EFIS, FMS, GPWS and TCAS
• Mass and balance, aircraft performance and flight planning
• Fuel planning, point of equal time and point of safe return

Aviation Meteorology — Appendix B

• Atmosphere, pressure, temperature, density and altimetry
• Wind, thermodynamics, clouds, fog and precipitation
• Air masses, fronts, pressure systems and climatology
• Aviation weather hazards, observations, charts and forecasts

Radio Aids and Instruments — Appendix C

• Radio-navigation aids and radar
• Area navigation, satellite and inertial systems
• Flight instruments, air-data and gyroscopic systems
• Indications, operating principles, accuracy and limitations

The wider CAR also lists Air Regulation, Aircraft and Engines, Technical Specific, applicable Technical Performance and Radio Telephony. Required papers depend on the candidate's licensing route and recognised credits. This is a syllabus overview — the DGCA CAR contains the detailed topics.

How IFA Approaches ATPL Preparation

Advanced questions become easier to work through when the underlying relationships are clear. Lessons give students room to revisit an earlier concept, compare methods and explain why a result is reasonable.

Preparation also develops spoken explanations. Students learn to organise an answer, state the assumptions they are making, and respond to a follow-up question without losing the main point — particularly useful when a familiar topic is presented in a different way.

Examination Format and Pattern

The published DGCA examination CAR specifies objective theory papers, with Technical Performance treated separately, and a 70% theory pass standard. It also provides for oral examinations in Air Navigation and Radio Aids & Instruments.

DGCA publishes current examination and ATPL oral notices through Pariksha. Written preparation and oral preparation therefore have different demands: one calls for accurate answers within the paper's conditions, the other requires a clear explanation and the ability to develop it further. Applicable papers, oral eligibility, timings and qualifying requirements follow the current DGCA instructions for the candidate's category.

CPL holders and other eligible candidates preparing for the DGCA ATPL examinations applicable to their licence and experience. Preparation can also support pilots returning to advanced theory after time away from classroom study.
